For several years, doctoral students at the research school have been able to travel out into the world and take part in international research in ageing and health. Now SWEAH has granted three more applications, which concern trips to Australia, Italy and Portugal.

In this autumn call the following applications were granted:

Pernilla Alencar Siljehag, Karolinska Institutet

Pernilla is granted 20 000 SEK to cover part of the travel and accommodation cost when visiting the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal on 3-16 November 2024.

"The purpose of my visit is to present my research project and exchange knowledge on research in the field of ageing and health with other European researchers. I want to better understand the circumstances of Portuguese long-term care and how the health care system is organized to help older people. As in other countries, Swedish eldercare is strongly linked to the local context", she says.

Klara is granted 50 000 SEK to cover the travel and accommodation costs when she will visit the School of Social Sciences, Western Sydney University, in Australia February-March 2025.

"The primary goal of my research visit is to engage with their cuttingedge, intersectional research on ageing, which is highly renowned internationally. During my visit, I will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with leading researchers whose work is defining the field of sexuality in later life", she says.

Klara also plans to visit several organizations in Australia, that are pivotal in the field of ageing research, to observe and learn from their operational frameworks and methodologies.

William is granted 29 980 SEK to cover the travel and accommodation costs when he will visit the University of Bologna, Italy, in March-May 2025.

"One purpose is to meet my mentor from my affiliation in the Swetaly University Collaboration, Professor Lorenzo Chiari. His research expertise lies in digital health/biomarkers, particularly telerehabilitation and healthy and active ageing, and the evaluation of movement, balance, and fall risk with wearable sensors. I am also highly interested in learning more about the Digital Lifelong Prevention (DARE) project and its sub-studies to collect data on fall risk assessment using sensors and the data processing pipeline. It seeks to gather comprehensive data on fall incidents among older adults, including environmental factors and physiological parameters, to develop and refine machine learning algorithms for fall detection", says William.

The next opportunity to apply for a travel grant from SWEAH will be the spring 2025.
