Ongoing courses

Here you will find information about ongoing courses on ageing and health provided by SWEAH.

THEORIES OF AGEING, 3 ECTS

The Swedish National Graduate School for Competitive Science on Ageing and Health (SWEAH) invites PhD students affiliated to SWEAH to apply for the course Theories of ageing, 3 ECTS. The course is included in the specific SWEAH curriculum, why priority is given to PhD students affiliated with SWEAH. Subject to availability, this course is also open for other PhD students within the field of ageing and health.

The course will be held in English and implemented as a distance learning course using the online learning platform Moodle and one face-to-face workshop located in Lund.

The course starts online March 1, 2022 with individual as well as group assignments. The date of the face-to-face workshop is May 3-4. Along with SWEAHs excellent Professors Susanne Iwarsson and Boo Johansson, internationally renowned experts Professor Merril Silverstein, USA, and Dr Suresh Rattan, Denmark, will provide different perspectives on ageing theories; psychological, sociological, biological as well as multidisciplinary.

The workshop is followed by individual work until examination seminars in June 2022. The deadline for the final examination task is August 26, 2022 which marks and end of the course.

The course is a specialization in theories of ageing, and of ageing and health.

The participants are expected to assimilate a multidisciplinary approach in the application of theories. The course is based on the theories which participants have chosen for their thesis projects, and on different theories of ageing and of ageing and health.

Some comments from prior participants:

“I have now achieved the ability to relate different theoretical perspectives to each other, i.e. compare their strengths and limitations.”
“I have more ideas about different theories that could be relevant for my thesis work.”
“Through the course and SWEAH as a whole, I have become more aware of the importance of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations”
“Since I did not have any experience within theories before, I learnt a lot from the course. It has given me new knowledge and insight on how different  disciplines use theories in their research.”
“I really liked the diversity of lectures, it really helped me to understand the different fields and linked them together. Good with a lot of time to discuss.”
“Insight: That one needs different theories and knowledge of others even when they   don’t apply to your own research field.”
