Theories of Ageing, 3 ECTS

Course spring 2026, Lund University

SWEAH invites PhD students to apply for the course Theories of ageing. The course is included in the specific SWEAH curriculum, why priority is given to PhD students affiliated with SWEAH. Subject to availability, this course is also open for other PhD students within the field of ageing and health.

Registration December 1, 2025 - January 31, 2026.

The course will be held in English and implemented as a distance learning course using the online learning platform Canvas and one face-to-face workshop located in Lund. See draft schedule below.

The date of the face-to-face workshop is May 5-6, where internationally renowned experts Professor Merril Silverstein, USA, and Dr. Suresh Rattan, Denmark, will provide a sociological as well as a biological perspective on ageing theories. Lecturers are also Professors Susanne Iwarsson and Boo Johansson.The workshop is followed by individual work until examination seminars. 

The course is a specialization in theories of ageing, and of ageing and health. The participants are expected to assimilate a multidisciplinary approach in the application of theories. The course is based on the theories which participants have chosen for their thesis projects, and on different theories of ageing and of ageing and health. 

All activities are mandatory unless otherwise stated. A draft of the full study guide will be available before the end of December.

April 13, 13.00-15.00, Optional online lecture “Overview of theories, models, and frameworks: What’s the difference?”
May 5-6 Two-day workshop on theories of ageing. Starts at 8.30 on May 5 at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University and ends at 16.00 on May 6. Plan to arrive in Lund on May 4.
May 7-June 5 Individual assignments and online group work
Jun 8-9 Online final seminar 
June 18 Submit final paper - course ends
